There are things like VCRs and Polaroid instant cameras that are nearly extinct. I loved the original years ago and this one is great too. It is still a handy book but it seems to be a re-release of the previous edition. The computer section identified ports and components used 10 yrs ago. My only complaint is that it supposed to be the latest update released this year(2009). It seemed to be outdated in certain areas particularly in the electronics sections.
I was hoping to get a new and revised version. But, I would also like to add that just as excellent a book as well is the "Do-it-Yourself Manual which actually WAS NEW and REVISED - that, I was happy about). Excellent and INDISPENSABLE tool. Well, the joke was on me when I opened it only to see an EXACT copy of the OLD book (& same OLD cover) that I've already owned for 13 years, I was quite disappointed you might say. ** These are excellent references to own - just be cautious of the "version" you are buying. However,.I already own this book copyright 1996 (nothing newer SINCE). and was hoping since it is 13 years old already and when I saw the "NEW" cover with the "NEW" printing date of June 2009 (yet-to-be-printed.).
when i bough this book i thought it would be a "do-it-yourself" manual, rather than a "fix-it-yourself".But shame on me, i did not pay enough attention to the title.Still useful, but most of the appliances presented in there are from the 70's/80's, and while some people have a pretty retro spirit, some others buy the new stuff out there, which is too modern for this book
Most of these reviews are of an *earlier* version of the book. Quite a bit has happened in the past 18 years, so is this a better book.
What are the differences. If so, how.
I'm extremely confused about these reviews. What is the difference between "Fixing it Yourself" (the *new* book) and "Doing it Yourself" (the *old* book).
These reviews should be of the *current* book not the *old* book. First, the book is listed as being published in June 11, 2009, which is in the future.
Second, *none* of the reviews mention how this book is different from the "New Complete Do-It-Yourself Manual which was published in 1991.
It's better than American Express saying don't leave home without it. I know they will need it and use it. Even if they have to call repair folks to do the job, at least what the repairman/repairwoman does will make sense to them. When I was a "new" homeowner, I had no helper to diagnose problems, or see them before they became problems, other than my Dad. just stay home and fixit yourself :) It helped me with plumbing problems, electrical (minor ones, that is) problems, mechanical problems, fix a bike, etc. Through the years, Dad's guidance and help and THIS BOOK, an earlier version thereof, were my bible for a new homeowner. When my daughter and husband became new homeowners, I gave her husband a copy of this book for his birthday.
